Cleaning out the bookmarks:
RIP, Rick WrightIs the internet doomed to failure if people cannot trust the information on it? I don't quite get Berners-Lee's point in this article. He suggests that an inability to tell correct information from incorrect information will cause the internet to become useless.
I'm always flabbergasted when seemingly intelligent people feel that policing publications for accuracy is better than teaching people to think. The internet is no different from paper here: When you read something, you need to do two things:
1 - Consider the source.
2 - Think critically, and examine what you're reading.
Is it plausible? Is it reliable? Have you cross-referenced it?
I have no idea why Sir Tim thinks he's better than I am at discerning "reliable" from "unreliable", but surely he has to see that his planned strategy of branding websites as "reliable" is doomed to failure. I mean, many news outlets are "reliable", but most of these still make errors regularly. Does this mean that the BBC and NYT cannot be classified as reliable?
A bit old, but
a hacker has his extradition upheld. I love this. Guy hacks into US Military databases, which are top secret. Gets caught.
His excuse? " I was looking to uncover an alien conspiracy."
Read that again -- he is actually admitting that he hacked the databases for the purpose of uncovering information classified as Top Secret by the military, for the purpose of distributing this information to the general public, worldwide. He calls this "harmless and innocent".
And he thinks that because the "alien" angle sounds a bit loopy, it means he should get away with it. Unfortunately for him, judges (thus far) are swayed more by logic than cute fluffy aliens.
Thailand's PM ousted, not due to all the protests against him, but because he hosted a cooking show.
German government forces women into sex trade -- they'll take away your welfare if you refuse to become a prostitute.
